Rare boat shed offered to market for first time in two decades

Located at 19 Hikoikoi Reserve, Marine Parade, Petone, the distinctive structure is being offered for sale through Ray White Kemeys Brothers, with listing agent Hamish Drumm describing it as “one of the most unique coastal assets to come up in the Lower Hutt area in recent years”.

“This is not just a storage shed, it’s a purpose-built, highly functional marine base right on the harbour’s edge,” Mr Drumm said.

“Opportunities like this are incredibly rare, particularly given current planning restrictions. You simply couldn’t recreate something like this today.”

The seller, Jan Peryer, said the shed belonged to her late brother-in-law Brian, who was a marine engineer. He bought the property about 25 years ago, and demolished and rebuilt the shed through her building company at the time, Peryer Construction.

“Brian had a lifelong connection to the sea,” Ms Peryer said.

“He used it frequently for leisure including boating and working on vessels, and it’s a really cool structure that’s quite unique.

“With the new council laws, you can no longer do restorations like that, so it’s really special.”

A standout feature is the heavy-duty winch system, allowing owners to bring a boat directly inside and securely lock it away, a rare and highly sought-after capability for serious boaties.

“That ability to winch your boat in and secure it would be hugely attractive for anyone who spends time on the water,” Ms Peryer said.

She said the possibilities were endless when it came to potential uses for the boat shed.

“People who have a love of the sea or watersports or fishing,” Ms Peryer said.

“We also thought it would be an ideal base for a marine broker or insurance broker alike, an inspirational setting for an artist or architect, or perhaps just a logical location for a jet ski club or enthusiast.
